The Story of Theatrebarn
Theatrebarn was the legacy gift of James Wellman and David Swift, the last residents of the Grange and devoted fans of theatre and fine dining.
Theatrebarn is a stunning Grade II* listed 178-seat professional theatre renovated from a medieval tithe barn.
While living at the Grange, they turned the attic into ‘Theatreroom’, an intimate 106 seat venue where guests were invited to nights of live performance (the opening night in 1979 was delivered by Dame Peggy Ashcroft) followed by lavish buffet dinners.
As their soirees grew in scale and reputation, in 1983 they bought the cluster of derelict medieval barns adjacent to the Grange and transformed them into a 178-seat theatre with a commercial kitchen and large dining area.
They continued to entertain, feed and amaze their friends here for many years, until 2017 when they both had passed away. Theatrebarn, and the love they poured into it, was the gift to the Charitable Trust.
